|
Rhône-Alpes is a region of low and high mountains, plains and river valleys with the Rivers Saône and Rhône after which the region was named. To the west, the region includes the
foothills of the Massif Central.
To the east, along the Swiss and Italian borders, lies a stunning array of mountains, lakes and steep valleys: Lakes Annecy and Le Bourget, the Rhône and Isère river valleys and
the Alps combine to make the region a haven for winter sports enthusiasts and tourists.

Chamonix - fashionable skiing resort near Mont Blanc. The first winter Olympics were held here in 1924.
Albertville -
hosted the 1992 Winter Olympics, the facilities created have been made into leisure parks.
Aubenas -
perched on a rocky outcrop, this lovely town has a 12th-century castle facing impressive 16th-century houses.
Evian-Les-Bains
- spa resort with casino, golf course, sailing club and the Palais de Congres. Home to the most popular mineral water in France.
Grenoble
- one of the largest French university towns with breathtaking views of the mountains. You can take a cable car up to the old Bastille fort some 475m up. There are plenty of museums, the Institute of Geology and Alpine Geography and the Dauphinois museum of mountain life through the centuries.
Lyon - capital of the Rhone Alps region, a bustling town with two rivers running through the heart of it. Large leafy squares with lively cafes, shops and restaurants, museums galore and ornate cathedrals.
Beaujolais Country
- north west of Lyon, a highly productive vineyard region that makes the famous Beaujolais wine. Along the Route du Beaujolais are many opportunities to sample the wine of the region at the caves co-operatives and the excellent restaurants along the way.
Villefranche-sur-Saône - This medieval city has become a busy industrial and commercial centre and the capital of the Beaujolais vineyards.
Bourg-en-Bresse
- found in the flat farming area of Bresse north east of Lyon, famous for its Bleu de Bresse cheese. Bourg is the capital of this area, it is a large commercial town with a XVIc. church.
Crest
- a hilltop town on the North bank of the Drome with an impressive 12c hillside keep, in ruins but still retaining its dark dungeons. Climb to the top for a fantastic mountain panorama.
Saint-Etienne
- beautiful city of art and history.
Chambéry - the centre of Savoyard life, this city became the capital of the Dukes of Savoy in 1232.
Annecy -
lakeside town with a beautiful river and canal, and is called “the Venice of Savoie".
Vienne - The gateway to the Dauphiné area, the town has a Roman temple and a spectacular Gothic cathedral.
Privas - with its magnificent bridge, the Pont Louis XIII, spanning the Ouvèze River. It is the administrative capital of Ardèche département.
Valence - the capital of the Drome, Valence has some interesting old buildings, museums with Roman mosaics and a festival of classic music every summer.
