Outside The house is surrounded by a patio with barbecue, tables and chairs for outdoor eating.
Both these houses are set in an acre of grounds, surrounded by orchard, meadow and woodland. They both have their own garden and are completely separate.
The houses are situated in the countryside in the centre of a triangle formed by the villages of Epaignes, Lieurey and Cormeilles. The small towns of Epaignes and Lieurey are equidistant from the house. They both have a good bread shop, butcher, chemist and general store with a small weekly market. The smaller town of Cormeilles, a seven minute drive, is very pretty with a number of bars, restaurants, antique shops and food shops. There is an excellent tour (in English) of the Calvados factory. Pont Audemer, the nearest large town, has a medieval town centre and excellent twice-weekly markets. We are 20 miles from the ferry at Le Havre and an hour from Ouistreham (Caen). The Channel Tunnel/Calais/Boulogne is three hours away by motorway. Honfleur is perhaps the most famous resort on the beautiful Cote Fleurie with its yachting harbour, fishing port and quaint old streets. Art galleries, restaurants and bars flourish here. Deauville, a sophisticated and fashionable seaside town is popular with the Parisians, especially in August when the famous horse races take place. The adjoining resort of Trouville has a long sandy beach which is ideal for children. With children in mind there are swimming pools in Pont Audemer (12 minutes) and Honfleur (20 minutes). There is a large lake at Pont-l'Eveque where you can swim, play on the little beach, take a boat out or fish. Further down the coast are other attractive resorts such as Cabourg and Houlgate. There is a Conservation Parc/Zoo (Cerza) where animals can be seen in their natural habitat at Ouilly-du-Rouley. There are some very interesting museums in the area. The Peace Museum (Musee de Paix) in Caen is exceptional and gives a very moving account of both World Wars. There are two very good war museums in Falaise and Bayeux; maritime museum in Honfleur and Fecamp and the Museum of Art in Trouville. The Normandy landing beaches and the Bayeux tapestry are all accessible, taking about an hour to reach. Monet's garden at Giverny is a 45 minutes drive and is well worth a visit but gets a little crowded in the tourist season. Le Bec Hellouin, south of Pont Audemer, is a picturesque village, where you can wander round the abbey grounds. Paris can be reached by train from the station at Bernay which is 20 minutes drive to the south. The journey to Paris takes about an hour and a quarter. There are timetables at the house. Disneyworld can then be reached by metro. The historic city of Rouen is an hour away and offers a good day out - museums, markets, restaurants and serious shopping. It can also be reached by train from Bernay. Several golf courses. |
