It takes its name from the marsh that covered the area which was drained in the 12th century. Henri IV had it developed into a residential district in the late 16th century but at that time it was called the Place Royale where the rich and famous built beautiful, magnificent mansions. Notable churches in the Marais include the St-Gervais-St-Protais, St-Paul-St-Louis and Notre-Dame-des-Blancs-Manteaux.
