Brittany is one of the most popular areas of France with British holidaymakers and not far from the channel ports. This north western part of France is
almost a country of its own with particular traditions and cultures and even their own language, still spoken by about 800,000 Bretons. Surrounded on three sides by rocky coastline, Brittany is a region famous for
its peninsulas, harbours and unspoilt sandy beaches.
St Malo - Old Corsair Port with a walled town full of seafood restaurants, souvenir shops and pedestrianised
ramparts which offer a fantastic view of the port.
Cancale
- Small picturesque fishing town famous for its oysters and seafood. There are two museums in the town, the Musee des traditions populaires and the Musee de l’huitre et du coquillage. Also, there are some wonderful walks along the rugged coastal paths.
Le Mont St Michel
(on Brittany border) - Magnificent Abbey perched on an island joined to the mainland by a causeway. The abbey stands above a village which is full of shops and restaurants. Spectacular at night. Tours of the abbey available in most languages.
Rennes - Capital of Brittany, population 200,000. University city which was ravaged by a huge fire in 1720. Beautiful 17th century Palais de Justice and medieval Place des Lices (Jousters Square).
Vannes - Ancient city port and capital of the Morbihan. Formerly a Gallo-Roman capital and home to the Dukes of Brittany. The city has walled ramparts and half-timbered houses, a canal that runs through the old town and a cathedral that took 6 centuries to build. Nearby are the butterfly gardens and aquarium.
Quimper - prefecture of Finistere, capital of the duchy of Cornouaille and oldest Breton city. Magnificent 12th - 16th century cathedral, cobbled streets, ramparts and high above the city the most amazing panoramic view of the surrounding area.
