Outside Outside barbecue, table tennis, generous seating and deckchairs and a large table under a covered area. With the entrance gate locked small children can roam free. The enclosed swimming pool ensures that children are safe and the children’s platform 4m X 3m depth 0.75m with built in steps provides a paddling area. The covered outside pool area and barbecue is perfect for candlelit dinners. Pay Au Bruc is very child friendly with 12 (or more) “bunnies” at loose in the garden, nightingales singing in the forest and the occasional deer flitting across the lawn. This beautiful house is currently for sale at £500,000 (non negotiable) and is let at £2,000 a month from September to September on a “try before buy” basis which will be refunded in the event of a sale.
Mysterious Medoc is probably one of the regions least known to the English. Unlike other areas of France the forests and countryside are accessible to all with hundreds of kilometres of cycling tracks and well sign-posted footpaths. Montalivet is known for its vibrant market, its safe bathing and watersports, particularly surfing. The town retains an old fashioned, small scale seaside atmosphere and is extremely popular with the young due to its slightly "hippy" market and its relaxed surfing image. Montalivet’s huge everyday market sells everything from Mexican hammocks to foie gras. The best oysters come from Arcachon and are served every morning at Montalivet market. The Gironde has 120 miles of unbroken coastline with some of the best surfing beaches in Europe. Each beach along this region has a slightly different character. |

Going south towards Hourtin is the “Pin Sec” beach which is wild, totally undeveloped and approached via a beautiful drive through pines and cork oaks. Watch the surfers and the sun go down in the simple restaurant overlooking the beach. Hourtin has the joys of a great beach with the lake virtually alongside. The next beach south is Lacanau, larger and host to the World Pro Surfing with all its accompanying razzmatazz. Going north from Montalivet is Soulac a more sedate resort with a fabulous beach, a good pedestrianised shopping street, gastronomic indoor market and some restaurants overlooking the sea. A 15 minute drive away from the beaches will take you into another world of wild marshes, egrets and small fishing ports with the classic wooden “cabanes” (shacks), on stilts over the water taking a step back in time to a different, simple way of life in tune with nature and the tides. Restaurants are reasonable in the area and there are plenty of gourmet restaurants as well and also many suitable for children. The Hourtin-Carcans lake is the largest lake in France and a paradise for water sports and fishing. |
